Saharawi Movement for Peace (MSP) visits the south of Gran Canaria

Mohamed Cherif, a prominent leader of the Sahrawi Movement for Peace (MSP), visited Sahrawi workers employed in the tourism sector in the south of Gran Canaria on Monday, a significant group that has found a vital livelihood in this industry far from their homeland. During his meeting, Cherif recognised the efforts of the Sahrawi community to integrate into the labour fabric of one of the most dynamic areas of the Canarian economy, highlighting the importance of their contribution to tourism in the region, especially in areas such as hospitality, trade and services. He added that these meetings are taking place in various tourist destinations in the EU.

In his talks with the workers, Cherif stressed the MSP's commitment to seeking political solutions to the Western Sahara conflict that would allow for a more stable and prosperous future for its people. He stressed that the movement advocates a peaceful and negotiated path, far from bellicose positions, with the aim of offering real alternatives to young Sahrawis who are forced to emigrate in search of better opportunities. "You are the example that the Sahrawi community is capable of overcoming adversities and contributing constructively to the societies that host them," he said.

In addition to listening to their concerns, Mohamed Cherif encouraged the Sahrawis of southern Gran Canaria to remain united and strengthen their cultural identity, even in a diaspora context. The visit was also an opportunity to discuss the challenges they face, from access to more qualified jobs to the need for political representation that gives voice to their concerns in international forums. The Sahrawi leader promised to bring these demands to the MSP and to work towards policies that benefit his community both in the Canary Islands and in Western Sahara.
