At Christmas, where is the time of peace?

MASPALOMAS24H Wednesday, December 25, 2024

Christmas has always been a symbol of peace, a time to reflect and celebrate togetherness. However, in a world marked by conflict, war and crisis, that promise of tranquillity seems to be fading away.

In Ukraine, Christmas tree lights go out under the sound of bombs. In the Middle East, Christmas carols are replaced by sirens and wailing. In Africa, entire communities flee the echo of gunfire, leaving behind broken homes and dreams. Political conflicts and the lack of solutions generate anxiety and mistrust, increasing the emotional strain on society. Visible wars show us the rawness of violence, but there is another struggle, silent and equally devastating: the war against our mental health.

The double battle of today

We live in a world that faces not only armed conflicts, but also a growing mental health crisis. Anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress… These invisible enemies relentlessly attack a humanity already worn down by uncertainty and adversity.

The emotional strain caused by news of war and tragedy is combined with the daily pressure of an increasingly competitive and disconnected society. How can we talk about peace when so many minds live at war with themselves?

A short monologue to reflect on:

“What does peace mean? Is it the absence of bullets or just a respite from everyday problems? Every Christmas, we hang decorations and light candles hoping for warmth, but have we forgotten to look inside ourselves? While children run away from their homes, we deal with fears we don’t always understand. Peace is not a gift we receive, it is an achievement we must all seek. But how can we achieve it if we ignore the wars we wage in our minds?”
