New flu outbreak with intestinal disorders worries the Canary Islands: measures and prevention

Health authorities warn of a new outbreak of influenza (flu) that combines respiratory symptoms with intestinal disorders

A new flu virus, known as intestinal flu, is affecting much of Spain with symptoms that combine the classic respiratory effects of influenza (fever, congestion and sore throat) with digestive disorders such as diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal pain. This virus, although not usually serious, can cause dehydration and severe discomfort, especially in vulnerable people such as children, the elderly and people with chronic diseases. Health authorities stress the importance of recognizing the symptoms and acting quickly to avoid complications.

The most densely populated urban areas are registering a higher incidence, such as Madrid and Barcelona, while in the Canary Islands the impact is moderate, with more frequent cases in Tenerife and Gran Canaria due to their larger population. Other islands such as Lanzarote and Fuerteventura have also reported localised outbreaks, although on a smaller scale. The Canary Islands Health Department has intensified surveillance measures, urging the population to reinforce hygiene and go to the doctor if symptoms persist.

To prevent infection, frequent handwashing, wearing masks in crowded places and avoiding contact with sick people are recommended. As a complement, some natural remedies can help relieve symptoms: chamomile and ginger infusions to reduce inflammation and nausea, aloe vera to soothe the digestive tract and the consumption of a soft diet based on rice, bananas and grated apple.

It is also essential to stay hydrated with homemade serums:

To prepare a homemade natural serum, mix 1 liter of drinking water (boiled and cooled if not bottled) with 2 tablespoons of sugar, 1/2 teaspoon of salt and, optionally, 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda and the juice of half a lemon. Stir until everything is dissolved and consume in small sips throughout the day to rehydrate, especially in cases of diarrhea or vomiting. Consult a doctor if symptoms persist or worsen.
