The General Chief of the Canary Islands Command of the Army, Julio Salom, has claimed this Monday the fundamental role of the Army in guaranteeing security in such a strategic area as tourism in the islands, underlining its unwavering commitment to the protection of citizens and visitors.
In this context, the Navy will have, for the first time, the support of the Isaac Peral submarine, a demonstration of the technological progress and operational capacity of our Armed Forces. Also scheduled are the international exercise "Oceansky 2025" and the exercise "Canasar", which will take place in Mogán (Gran Canaria), together with the deployment of the Eurofighters at the Gando Air Base, thus strengthening the preparation and defence in this geostrategic enclave.
General Salom also proudly announced the imminent arrival of the Training Ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano to the ports of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas. This emblematic ship will have among its crew the Princess of Asturias, who will participate as a lady midshipman, highlighting the link between tradition and generational change in our military institutions.
During his speech, given on the occasion of the solemn celebration of the Military Easter, General Salom recalled the migration crisis affecting the Canary Islands coasts and other regions of Spain, recognizing the work of the Civil Guard, the Police, Maritime Rescue, the Red Cross and various non-governmental organizations. "We are facing one of the greatest humanitarian tragedies of recent years," he said, highlighting the importance of solidarity and collective effort in the face of this reality.
The General also referred to recent natural disasters, such as the devastation caused by the DANA in Valencia, and paid tribute to the 216 victims located in Valencia, Castilla-La Mancha and Andalusia. He reflected on the vulnerability of our society in the face of these tragedies and emphasized the need to strengthen preparation and resources to minimize the risks. "Our deepest affection and solidarity with the victims, and our gratitude to the more than 8.000 military personnel who, with courage and dedication, work on the ground," he said.
In relation to immigration, he highlighted the progress made in infrastructure and in management and coordination mechanisms, which have facilitated a more effective reception of those who arrive in search of hope. However, he regretted the human losses suffered, such as those that occurred on September 28 near La Restinga, on the island of El Hierro, where 9 people died and many more disappeared at sea. "These episodes challenge us as a society and force us to continue working to avoid similar tragedies, because the sea, always unpredictable, continues to witness unacceptable suffering."
Finally, General Salom reaffirmed the Armed Forces' commitment to the defence, security and well-being of all, recalling that their mission is to always be at the service of Spain, prepared to respond effectively and humanely to the challenges of the present and the future.
