Taking advantage of the hangover from January 6th, we tell you one of the most curious anecdotes about one of the most characteristic products of gastronomy and which is already part of Christmas heritage.
The hangover from Three Kings' Day is characterized by the return to routine, the queues to exchange those gifts that they didn't get right and the aftertaste of Roscón de Reyes (although in many homes there is enough to enjoy it again on January 7).
The roscón, which has been part of our Christmas traditions for as long as we can remember, was on the verge of being banned by the European Union.
In 2008, EU food safety regulations prohibited the inclusion of non-edible objects inside food, which directly affected the Spanish tradition of hiding a surprise inside the roscón. The EU's intention, although not officially communicated to the public (partly thanks to the fact that social media as we know it today was just beginning to crawl at that time), generated some concern among producers and consumers of this emblematic Christmas sweet.
Fortunately, through presentations and exhibitions defending the historical and cultural value of this product, Spain managed to negotiate an exception for the Roscón de Reyes, allowing the custom of including small figures or beans inside to be maintained as long as consumer safety was guaranteed.
An achievement that has allowed us to preserve a tradition rooted in Spanish culture and that every year unites millions of families in the country with a breakfast that is already part of the Christmas tradition in Spain.
