José Antonio Newport: "We hope that this situation will be resolved as soon as possible, since the financial resources of the European Funds are in danger"

The president of Grupo Newport recalls that “we already have favourable reports from all administrations, including an initial one from the Telde council”

The president of the Newport Group, José Antonio Newport, stated this Friday that the explanatory documentation requested by the technical office of the Urban Planning Department of Telde City Council has been submitted, as required for the declaration of Dreamland StudiosCanarias as a Project of Insular Interest, a necessary step for the start of the construction work on the City of Cinema "and urgent, since economic resources that we have from the European Funds are at stake and that could be lost if these clarifications requested by the technical office of Telde are not urgently resolved", says Newport.

This documentation is already in the hands of the Gran Canaria Council, which fully supports the Dreamland StudiosCanarias project. “We have submitted all the documentation to the Gran Canaria Council, which is the Substantive Body and the one that must respond to Telde, trusting that the Telde City Council will report favourably as soon as it studies the documentation that we have submitted.” The project also has the support of all political groups represented in the Island Corporation, including those that make up the Telde government.

“Dreamland Studios Canarias”, recalls the president of Grupo Newport, “already has all the mandatory favourable reports from the public administrations, among others: the Environmental Report, Civil Aviation, the Ministry of Defence, the State Telecommunications Area, the Island Water Council, the Department of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands, the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, Architecture and Housing of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and the Historical Heritage of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria”, and José Antonio Newport emphasises that “we also have the initial favourable report from the Telde Town Council itself, which asks us to resolve a series of questions on technical issues of the project that we hope will be resolved with this new documentation delivered, in which we respond point by point to everything that has been requested of us”.

The Mayor of Telde, Juan Antonio Peña, has recently spoken out in favour of the project and pointed out in several interviews with local media “the need for this matter to be resolved as soon as possible, which we appreciate and is in line with the rest of the administrations that have given their approval to the project”, highlights José Antonio Newport, who hopes that “next week at the latest, we will have the approval of Telde so that we can subsequently take Dreamland StudiosCanarias to the plenary session of the Cabildo for its final approval as a Project of Insular Interest”.

Telde, a world reference

This project will position Telde as a world leader in several areas: “Telde will become the largest audio-visual hub in southern Europe, it will become a world leader in content development and, of course, a world leader in Technological Leisure linked to virtual and augmented reality” says Newport, “and it will completely change the audiovisual panorama on the islands”. Dreamland Studios Canarias will complement the production companies that usually shoot series and films on the islands (a business that is increasing year after year in the Canary Islands) with its resources, facilities and infrastructures so that they can finish their post-production work in the Canary Islands, which will generate greater benefits for the Canarian economy. The development of this Project will position Telde as a world leader.

The facilities of Dreamland Studios Canarias, which include the largest set in Europe, an underwater filming set or watertank and a modern pre- and post-production building, will allow production companies to complete the entire process on the islands, that is, carry out recording work on indoor sets, pre- and post-production and not just limit them to filming our landscapes and be forced to leave to finish the work outside the Canary Islands.

Great job opportunities and the Pull Effect

The Dreamland Studios Canarias project will promote “a change in the economy of the islands”, says its president, “the job offer in the digital sector totals more than 72.000 professionals throughout Spain”. One of the main pillars of the project “will be training, since students will be able to be instructed through a training proposal with the most modern technological supports on the market”.

This training offer will include, among other actions, Artistic Design of Video Games, Programming and Advanced Development of Video Games, Development of Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality Applications, Design and Development of Artificial Intelligence Solutions, CGI and Audiovisual Postproduction, 2D and 3D Animation applied to audiovisual content.

It is important to note that the Economic and Fiscal Regime of the Canary Islands considers the audiovisual industry as a fundamental part of the economic development of the islands, and that the elimination of the joint annual limit for all productions of 50 million euros, to move to a system of individual limits per production, as regional aid to its operation, completes an ideal ecosystem for this industry to begin to change the face of employment in the Canary Islands.

These infrastructures will place Telde at the forefront of the digital and audiovisual sector in Spain and Europe. It should be remembered that every year the European Union demands 500.000 jobs related to the digital industry.

Newport says that Dreamland Studios Canarias “will create more than 300 direct jobs from the start, more than half of which will be highly qualified, distributed between the audiovisual and technological hubs and the virtual reality theme park.” Furthermore, it is expected that once the complex is fully operational, the total workforce will exceed 1.000 direct jobs.

This project will have a significant driving effect on other sectors of the economy of Telde, Gran Canaria and the Canary Islands in general. Thus, transport, tourism, hotels, restaurants, security, maintenance, services such as costume making, directors, scriptwriters, cameramen, musicians, actors, extras, production managers and assistants, directors, lighting technicians, sound technicians, post-production and mixing assistants, decorators, translators, among others, will see their activity increase thanks to this unifying project.

A space of 100.000 square meters

The Dreamland Studios Canarias facilities, which include the largest studio in Europe, an underwater filming set or watertank and a modern post-production building, will allow professionals from the audiovisual industry to complete the entire process on the islands.

The audiovisual infrastructure is completed with buildings intended to house dressing rooms, changing rooms, offices, a workshop for the creation of sets, props and a warehouse. The importance of the post-production building for film post-production stands out, which will be one of the bastions of the industry on the islands and will enable the real take-off of the industry on the islands by enabling the complete cycle of the creation of films and series.

Furthermore, the most modern technology of these facilities will allow the animation and video game industry to enhance 2D, 3D and special effects production and post-production, with a projection room where the final result of the entire spectrum of audiovisual productions to be developed can be tested.

The entire concept of a technological HUB is completed with the creation of an R&D&I laboratory at the Dreamland StudiosCanarias facilities, called DREAMLAB, as well as a Technological Leisure Theme Park with immersive Virtual Reality experiences and a Multidisciplinary Amphitheatre.

DREAMLAB, a meeting space for creators

The creation laboratory, called DREAMLAB, which will be a European benchmark in the sector, aims to be a space where high-tech digital content will be created with top-level virtual and augmented reality products, as well as video games (including triple A), all linked to the maximum use of artificial intelligence.

To do this, a supercomputer called Alisios will be incorporated, a device that will allow, among other things, high-quality rendering for films and at a speed 100 times higher than what we currently have in the Canary Islands and that with its power will make it possible to carry out calculation operations at the level of the needs of this industry together with AI work, development of video game rendering, or development of Virtual and Augmented Reality experiences. In addition, this device will help the different administrations and Companies that need computing power on the islands.

World Reference in Immersive, Holographic, Technological and Cinematographic Virtual Reality Experience Tourism

Another of the project's axes is a Technological Theme and Leisure Park, a visitable area where world-class immersive virtual reality experiences will be made available to users.

Dreamland Studios Canarias will be a world leader in immersive virtual reality experiences. With its own software and even hardware to develop these virtual or augmented reality experiences, the leisure area will be one of the most advanced in the world, even ahead of those in Madame Tussaud's in the USA, the Guiyang centre in China or the premises of the video game company Bandai Namco in Tokyo.

And the experiences with the most modern audiovisual equipment for virtual and augmented reality will be accompanied by other devices, such as gloves or special suits, which allow greater interaction with the environment, as well as the perception of different stimuli that intensify the sensation of reality, including various wind tunnels or mechanical arms and mechanical equipment that will produce the most advanced sensation of weightlessness.
