Urbaser denounces fraud in the waste management contract in the south of Gran Canaria

Urbaser, the company responsible for waste collection in the south of Gran Canaria until mid-January, has warned of a series of alleged irregularities in the management of the service by the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council. According to the company, since May 2019, it has continued to provide the service without a formal contract, using its own resources to guarantee the collection of waste from the economic capital of the Canary Islands.

The situation worsened during the last Christmas holidays, when the simultaneous breakdown of two essential collection vehicles made the situation even more complicated. Despite Urbaser's efforts to minimise the incidents, the City Council notified on 13 January that the contract was being terminated and that a new company, Martínez Cano, had been hired.

"We are facing a situation of great uncertainty," a spokesperson for the company told Maspalomas24H. "We have worked for months without a formal contract, using all means at our disposal to guarantee the provision of the service. The lack of communication from the City Council has made our work difficult and has harmed the residents," said the same source. Urbaser has pointed out that the continuity of the service without a formal contract for such a long period raises serious doubts about the legality and transparency of municipal management. The company would not rule out taking the appropriate legal measures to defend its reputation and demand a formal explanation from the City Council.
