Tourism in Gran Canaria has undergone a remarkable transformation thanks to the incorporation of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). These technologies have revolutionised the way travellers plan, book and experience their trips, offering greater convenience and personalisation at every stage of the process. This is what the Atenea project is all about, and this January 2025 it will begin its presentation tour in the Canary Islands tourism sector with Fitur, followed by ITB in Berlin and in November the WTM in London.
Since the beginning of 2025, Gran Canaria has been the scene of a new application to position the tourism business at the forefront of the digital transformation of tourism thanks to initiatives such as the Atenea project. Promoted by Canarian technology companies such as Tech Properties, in collaboration with Saberin Solution, Aurontech and A Fonte Penena, this project, supported by the EU Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (ICT/1519/2021) and the Ministry of Tourism, seeks to improve the tourist experience and encourage local spending. Through innovative technological solutions, the aim is to offer visitors personalized information and more authentic experiences, thus contributing to the sustainability of the destination.
Firstly, ICTs have facilitated access to detailed information about Gran Canaria, allowing tourists to virtually explore the island before their arrival. Mobile apps, websites and social media offer recommendations of places to visit, activities to do and dining options, all based on the traveller's preferences.
In addition, online booking platforms have simplified travel planning. Tourists can compare prices, read reviews and book accommodation, transport and activities quickly and efficiently. This not only improves the user experience, but also increases the competitiveness of the destination by facilitating the visibility of a wide range of local offers.
Once in Gran Canaria, ICTs play a crucial role in consolidating tourist spending at the destination. Through mobile applications and geographic information systems, tourists can receive personalized recommendations on nearby restaurants, shops and attractions, thus encouraging the consumption of local products and services. In addition, the use of technologies such as mobile payment and digital promotions facilitates transactions, making tourists feel more comfortable spending at the destination. In short, the integration of ICTs in the tourism sector of Gran Canaria has not only improved the traveler's experience, but has also strengthened the local economy by encouraging the consumption of products and services from the region. The island is thus positioned as a modern and accessible destination that adapts to the new trends of digital tourism.
