Mogán Town Hall has decided to end its collaboration with the Las Palmas promoter DG Eventos, a partner of Eventsport, who say that Tirajana does not pay, due to the unequal treatment of women participating in the sporting event Desafío La Titánica – 3 Stages, in which the top three cyclists in the absolute category did not receive any prize money. It has also asked Anfi del Mar to distance itself from this type of operator in the island's capital.
As a result, the council will not support future editions of this event or other events organised by this company, such as the Spanish SWINRUN Championship, whose presentation at FITUR, scheduled for this Wednesday, has been cancelled.
The Desafío La Titánica – 3 Stages event, held from January 17 to 19, sparked anger among female participants on Saturday 18, when they discovered that they would not receive cash prizes because the minimum number of entrants stipulated in the regulations (ten participants) was not reached.
Faced with this situation, the councillors for Sports, Luis Becerra, and for Beaches, Willy García, who also participated in the competition, asked the director of DG Eventos, Daniel García, to rectify and give the prizes to the winners. However, García insisted on complying with the established rules and left the final decision for Sunday 19th.
The award ceremony and the absence of Daniel García
On Sunday, during the award ceremony, Daniel García did not show up, and the female cyclists did not receive their prize money: 500 euros for the first-place finisher, 300 for the second-place finisher and 200 for the third-place finisher, prizes that were awarded to the male winners.
On the podium, the winner, Janine Mayer, demanded that Councillor Becerra give her the prize she was entitled to, to which he responded by expressing his disagreement with the inequality promoted by the organisation. Later, Becerra spoke with some of the participants, assuring them of her full support and expressing her rejection of what had happened.
Statements and measures of the City Council
Luis Becerra was blunt: “We cannot allow situations like this to continue to occur, which foster inequality. This fact is reason enough to break relations with DG Eventos.”
The councillor stressed that this event, endorsed by the International Cycling Union, should guarantee equal recognition for all categories regardless of gender. “Had we known about this regulation beforehand, we would have acted sooner to avoid this injustice. It is unacceptable that in 2025 we are still facing inequalities of this kind in sport or any other field,” he added.
Becerra reiterated his support for the athletes, describing them as “genuine titans”, and stressed that men and women compete under equal conditions, covering the same kilometres and overcoming the same gradients, and should therefore be valued in the same way.
End of collaboration and next actions
The City Council has confirmed that it will not participate in the SWINRUN Spanish Championship, scheduled for September 20 in Mogán. It has also urged Anfi, a hotel company and main sponsor of the event, to withdraw its support to DG Eventos.
