The Councillor for Tourism of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana Town Council, Yilenia Vega, has presented during the celebration of the Tourism Fair, Fitur, the main actions and projects promoted by the area of Tourism, Celebrations and Events, and Coastal Care, with the aim of consolidating Maspalomas Costa Canaria as one of the reference tourist destinations in Spain. Accompanied by the mayor of the municipality, Marco Aurelio Pérez; and the Councillor for Culture, Elena Álamo, the stand of the Alliance of Tourist Municipalities of the Canary Islands was the stage where the councillors made an assessment of the work carried out and future projects.

In his introduction, Marco Aurelio Pérez Sánchez highlighted the importance of diversifying the tourist proposals that Maspalomas Costa Canaria offers as a destination to attract a wider public. “We are aware that our visitors are looking for something more than just our excellent climate. Activities that break the seasonality and promote active and diverse tourism are essential to continue leading the market,” said the mayor, stressing that the range of events consolidates the cultural and festive identity of Maspalomas Costa Canaria.

The Councillor for Tourism began her speech by highlighting that, after Madrid and Barcelona, Maspalomas Costa Canaria is the third destination with the highest number of overnight stays in the country. She also underlined the importance of the national market, which in 2024 contributed more than 300.000 tourists, consolidating itself as a key segment for the municipality.

As for tourism actions, the councillor pointed out the significant increase in the promotion budget, which went from 260.000 euros at the beginning of the legislature to 1,4 million euros, 1.200.000 euros more. This investment is intended for both offline promotion actions at the different international fairs and for sponsoring events that attract thousands of visitors each year. Thus, she pointed out, among the complementary leisure activities and offerings for 2025, the Epic Gran Canaria Riu Hotels & Resorts, which will be held from 7 to 9 February; the Maspalomas International Carnival, from 18 to 30 March; the Canary Islands WRC Rally, scheduled from 24 to 27 April; the Maspalomas Pride, which will take place from 1 to 11 May; the Soul Festival Maspalomas, scheduled during the month of July; the Maspalomas Tourifest, on 26 and 27 September; Winter Pride, which will take place from 10 to 16 November, and the Children's New Year's Eve Bells, which will be held on 28 December. According to him, “these events bring together more than a million people every year, which not only stimulates the local economy, but also reinforces the international projection of the municipality”.

On the other hand, Vega addressed the investments in the improvement of the public spaces of the tourist city. Currently, the Maspalomas Tourist Consortium is carrying out works worth 7,6 million euros. These interventions include the improvement of the surroundings of the Charca and the Palmeral Oasis, with a budget of 6 million euros; the improvement of the accessibility to the beaches, with an investment of 1 million euros, and the conditioning of the slope known as Toboplaya, with an allocation of 600.000 euros.

In addition, three major projects are expected to be put out to tender throughout 2025, including the rehabilitation of the Paseo Marítimo from the Centro Comercial Tropical to the Beach Club, the creation of an avenue connecting El Hornillo with Pasito Blanco and the refurbishment of the surroundings of Barranco de Maspalomas. Progress is also being made on the tendering of the surroundings of the Faro de Maspalomas and on the concession of kiosks, hammocks and parasols to guarantee better service on the beaches and a renewed image.

In relation to the private sector, the councillor put forward the First Deputy Mayor, Alejandro Marichal, and the Urban Planning team that led to the recent signing of an agreement with the Department of Territorial Policy of the Government of the Canary Islands for the drafting and approval of a new Modernisation and Improvement Plan for Maspalomas Costa Canaria. This plan, which seeks to encourage the renovation of the accommodation plant and the shopping centres, is a key initiative that had not advanced since its declaration of nullity in 2018.

The councillor concluded by highlighting that the comprehensive strategy of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana Town Council is based on three fundamental pillars: an increase in public investment for the promotion of tourism, the improvement of public spaces through the Tourism Consortium and the encouragement of the private sector to continue modernising.

The presentation ended with a speech by the Councillor for Culture, Elena Álamo, who announced the main novelty of the ninth edition of the Maspalomas Costa Canaria Soul Festival, from 18 to 20 July on San Agustín Beach. The Councillor emphasised that this festival “is a tribute to the roots of soul and a reminder of how music can unite us. We are delighted to announce that this year we will pay tribute to Wilson Pickett, a legend of the genre, with the participation of the Memphis Music Hall Of Fame Band, directed by 'KC' Clayton. Our aim is to offer residents and tourists an unforgettable experience in a setting as unique as our San Agustín beach.”
