San Bartolomé de Tirajana has been awarded at Fitur 2025 as the tourist municipality in Spain that best manages water resources. The award, in recognition of the environmental commitment to sustainable tourism, was collected by Mayor Marco Aurelio Pérez Sánchez, who highlighted the responsible management that is being carried out in the municipality throughout the water cycle and its reuse.

“In San Bartolomé de Tirajana, we are working hard on the responsible management of the water cycle. Only 8% of the water that is put into circulation for the supply of residents is lost, and we insist on reusing it. That is the key that we are moving in the present, we moved in the past and we will continue to move in the future,” said the mayor.

1 The recognition of San Bartolomé de Tirajana took place within the framework of the #techYsostenibilidad forum dedicated to the convergence of technology and sustainability, organized at Fitur by the Veolia Group, a leading company and world reference in ecological transformation in the areas of water, energy and waste.

This is the first edition of this 'Veolia Recognition for transformative and sustainable tourism', intended to highlight leaders in tourism sustainability and to highlight their commitment to more responsible and environmentally friendly tourism. The award was given to the tourist town in the south of Gran Canaria "for its sustainability initiatives and the protection of its resources, especially water in a context of water scarcity."

In addition, in this first edition of this “Veolia Recognition”, the Lopesan hotel group was also awarded, receiving the award in the category of tourist establishment “for its commitment to energy efficiency and the circular economy”.

Mayor Marco Aurelio Pérez participated alongside municipal councillors from Getxo, Donostia and Salou, representatives of institutions and experts from Veolia in the round table discussion and debate on critical issues for the future of sustainable tourism that was held within the scope of the technological forum, such as the one dedicated to the relevance at municipal level of water and resources for the development of tourism activity.
