The Department of Education installs preventive signs warning of student traffic and speed reduction in the vicinity of all educational centers in the municipality
The San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council has completed this Tuesday the installation of specific traffic signs in the vicinity of educational centres throughout the municipality to contribute to the safety of students.
This preventive measure adopted by the Education Department, headed by the second deputy mayor Elena Álamo Vega, and coordinated by the councilor Esther Delgado Sánchez, aims to contribute to creating much safer school environments, since the public educational centers of the municipality are located in urban areas and many of them on main roads.
“Road safety in our school zones is a priority, because young students are especially vulnerable on public roads. With this measure we want to prevent and reduce the risk of accidents,” says Elena Álamo.
The arrow signs in the shape of a vertical pencil alert drivers to drive in school zones, so they can take extra care and reduce their speed to less than 30 kilometres per hour. 38 units have been purchased at a cost of approximately 15.000 euros and meet the criteria and standards of the European Community. They are made of galvanised steel and are almost two metres high, and are labelled in yellow with reflective material.
They have been installed in the vicinity of the 11 Infant and Primary education centres (CEIP), the 2 Compulsory Education centres (CEOs of Tunte and Castillo del Romeral), the 4 Secondary institutes (IES) and the Special Education Centre of Pedrazo.
“In addition to their preventive nature, these signs send a clear message to the entire community about the importance of road safety in school zones and also serve as an educational tool for children, who learn to recognize traffic dangers and behave more safely when crossing the street,” says Elena Álamo.
