San Bartolomé de Tirajana strengthens the response capacity of its firefighters to emergencies

MASPALOMAS24H Thursday, January 30, 2025

The City Council completes the first phase of the renovation and modernization of the mobile fleet and service material of the Municipal Fire and Rescue Service (SEIS)

More powerful and lighter vehicles, non-polluting and adapted to new technologies, equipped with the necessary equipment to act quickly in almost any type of emergency.

The San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council presented this Thursday the last three vehicles acquired by the municipal institution for the Fire and Rescue Service (SEIS), specifically a light urban fire truck and two all-terrain pickup-type vehicles, intended to reinforce and modernise the services. The occasion was also used to show the set of the new 8 vehicles that were already presented on 26 July, in whose purchase approximately 2 million euros have been invested.

The exhibition of the fleet and its presentation by Mayor Marco Aurelio Pérez Sánchez and the sixth deputy mayor and councillor for Security and Emergencies, José Carlos Álamo Ojeda, took place on the esplanade of the Maspalomas Lighthouse. With the new fleet acquired, the City Council completes the first phase of the renovation and improvement of the Maspalomas fire brigade's fleet.

"Our firefighters have already completely renovated their vehicles and the necessary equipment to carry out the first emergency exit with full guarantees. The material presented is quite innovative due to its adaptation to new technologies and the changes that are emerging in emergencies," said the mayor.

The last three vehicles purchased have been invested by the Council in 547.000 euros. The light urban pump (BUL), with a 1.800-litre tanker used mainly for extinguishing, foam and ventilation, has cost around 357.000 €, and the two 4x4 vehicles that will be used to cover traffic accidents, fires and mountain rescues, one 190.000 €.

The Councillor for Security stated that with the presentation of these vehicles “the renovation of the first line of intervention of the fire service is completed, improving it, because it is the first time that this type of action element has been available”.

José Carlos Álamo stressed that the renewal of the fire brigade fleet “responds to a necessary task of modernising the service” which has been carried out following a thorough and detailed study carried out by specialists on all the actions carried out by the SEIS over the last few years, “with the aim of extracting the necessary information to configure the equipment of each of the vehicles acquired with the truly useful and necessary elements and tools”, such as devices for extracting vehicles from garages, fire blankets for electric vehicles or a mattress for rescues at height, among others.

The head of SEIS, José Felipe Santana Rodríguez, acknowledged “the importance of this presentation” because “it represents the culmination of a historic demand, since until today we have had vehicles between 20 and 30 years old that are disrespectful to the environment, unsuited to new technologies and with much more complex and less safe driving and handling. With the renewal, the services are being enhanced in order to offer a better service,” he said.

At the end of this first phase of the fleet renewal, “we have obtained a line of vehicles adapted to routine emergencies in order to act with the promptness required, because they are vehicles with dimensions, tonnage and engine power adapted to provide an immediate response to traffic accidents, forest and home fires, anti-suicide interventions, mountain rescues and others,” said the chief of the fire department. He stressed the importance of the material acquired to equip the assistance vehicles, “as expensive or more than the cars themselves, because it allows the Maspalomas firefighters to act in practically any type of emergency.”

The new vehicles purchased for the Local Police were also presented.
