Mogán City Council has launched a tender for the expansion of the Playa de Mogán desalination plant in Gran Canaria, with a budget of 12,1 million euros. This project is crucial to ensure the supply of drinking water to the growing population of the area, optimize the use of water resources and improve resilience to possible water shortages. The deadline for submitting bids is extended until February 24, 2025.
The current desalination plant, which has been operational since 2017, has a daily production capacity of 1,800 m³ of water. However, the increase in water demand in Playa de Mogán, as well as in the Mogán and Veneguera basins, has made this expansion necessary. In 2022, the company Canaragua Concesiones presented a feasibility study that was approved by the City Council in January 2024, followed by the approval of the preliminary expansion project in April of the same year.
The company that wins the tender will have to fulfil several responsibilities: operation, maintenance and upkeep of the current desalination plant from the time the contract is signed, drafting the Expansion Execution Project and processing authorisations with the competent authorities, construction of the expansion of the EDAM to increase its capacity to 3,000 m³/day and maintenance and operation of the facilities during the concession period, ensuring compliance with health and environmental regulations. In addition, the successful bidder must carry out all necessary inspections and comply with the quality and safety standards established in the terms and conditions.
The tendering process will be carried out under the public works concession regime, which means that the successful bidder will finance and execute the work, subsequently operating it under the conditions established by the Mogán City Council. Bidders can submit alternative proposals to the approved preliminary project or use it as a basis for their bids. The objective of this extension is to guarantee the supply of drinking water to a growing population, optimize the use of water resources and strengthen resilience to possible water shortages. This infrastructure is part of the plans to modernize and improve the municipality's public services, and represents a fundamental step towards improving the quality of service for the citizens and economic sectors of Mogán.
