In 2024, the south of Gran Canaria generated a total of 278.174 tonnes of waste through the Gran Canaria Sur Ecopark, which is managed by Prezero (formerly Ferrovial) and Ayagaures Medio Ambiente, the green subsidiary of Pérez Moreno. Raúl García Brink, the Environment Councillor for Gran Canaria, highlighted that last year, the two ecoparks on the islands received a total of 697.958 tonnes of waste. Of this, 73% came from municipal waste, unevenly distributed between the North Ecopark, which managed almost half (419.784 tonnes), and the South Ecopark with 77% of the total for the region.
García Brink highlighted the significant increase in the collection of organic waste, reaching 45%, thanks to the new system implemented in hotels and restaurants. This progress is crucial for optimising the use of water resources and improving waste management in the region. In 2028, the Salto del Negro landfills in the North Ecopark will be closed, in accordance with an agreement with the Department of Ecological Transition of the Government of the Canary Islands. From February 2025, the transfer of rejected waste from the Juan Grande plant in the South Ecopark will begin, with the aim of completing its filling and proceeding to its closure.
García Brink pointed out that Maspalomas, Juncalillo Sur and the summit are the areas with the highest level of non-compliance with environmental regulations. He emphasised the need to continue making progress in the conservation of protected natural areas, such as the Maspalomas Dunes, as well as in waste management. He stressed that, in light of the new EU demands, it is essential to raise public awareness and collaboration with local councils, as well as to intensify efforts to promote a circular economy.
