Former Cepsa begins selling biofuel to airlines in Gran Canaria

Moeve, formerly Cepsa, confirmed on Monday that it has signed an agreement with Norwegian to promote the decarbonisation of air transport between Spain and the Nordic countries, promoting the use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) on flights departing from Gran Canaria airport to Norway, Sweden and Denmark during the months of November and December 2024, that is, when it is high season in the south of Gran Canaria. "This contract represents a significant step towards sustainability in the air sector," the oil company said in a statement.

The company produces SAF at its La Rábida Energy Park in Huelva, using recycled cooking oils. These second-generation biofuels have the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90% over their life cycle compared to conventional kerosene, making them a key solution for reducing the carbon footprint in aviation.

Anders Fagernæs, Vice President Sustainability at Norwegian, highlighted the key role of SAF in their sustainability goals: “SAF is essential to achieving our goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 45% by 2030. Las Palmas is one of our most popular destinations, making it an ideal location to advance our SAF ambition. We are excited about this collaboration with Moeve and the progress towards reducing emissions.”

To ensure a constant supply of SAF to its customers, Moeve is developing, together with its partners, a new plant that will flexibly produce 500.000 tonnes of SAF and renewable diesel annually. This project will be part of the largest second-generation biofuel production complex in Southern Europe. With this development, the company is positioning itself as a leader in the production of 2G biofuels in Spain and Portugal, with a projected annual production capacity of 2,5 million tonnes by 2030, of which 800.000 tonnes will be SAF, enough to fly around the world 2.000 times.
