Nueva Canarias partners ask for a 20% IGIC on holiday rentals

The Sumar Movement party, led by Vice President of the Government Díaz, which partnered with Nueva Canarias in the last European elections, has proposed raising the IGIC tax rate for tourist accommodation in the Canary Islands, from the current 7% to 20%. This measure aims to reduce the profitability of these accommodations and facilitate access to more homes for conventional rental.

In a statement, Sumar in the Canary Islands has stated that this initiative could help increase the availability of rental housing in the archipelago, thus alleviating the shortage of homes faced by the Canarian population. In addition, they have criticised the Government of the Canary Islands (CC-PP) for its refusal to implement the State Housing Law and for its "total inaction" in the face of the housing crisis affecting the majority of citizens on the islands. "For this reason, we urge the PSOE to, in line with the state agreement, present this proposal for a 20% IGIC for holiday homes in the Canarian Parliament," declared the Sumar movement, which currently has no institutional representation in any public administration, whether at local, regional or state level.

The parliamentary spokesman for Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista (NC-BC), Luis Campos, demanded in September that the CC and PP government “rectify and approve” a temporary moratorium on new authorisations for holiday homes until the proposed law is approved and comes into force. Campos warned that holiday rentals already account for more than 44 percent of the total number of tourist accommodation places in the Archipelago.

Luis Campos regretted that the growing evolution of this activity “has ended up proving us right”. Since last April, NC-BC has presented various initiatives in the Legislature to stop the granting of new authorisations until the approval and entry into force of the Bill (PL) on Sustainable Management of Tourist Use of Housing. All of them, he stressed, were rejected by the groups that support the Executive of CC, the PP, the ASG and the AHI.
