Will the political mess over the “omnibus decree” affect the payment of pensions in February? Everything you need to know

We explain the key dates and everything you need to know about how the famous “omnibus decree” will affect pensions

Amid political uncertainty and recent negotiations in Congress, Canarian pensioners are wondering how these events will affect their payments in February 2025.

Recently, the Government approved a new omnibus decree that includes the revaluation of pensions: a 2,8% increase for contributory pensions and those of the State's passive classes, 6% for minimum pensions and 9% for non-contributory pensions and the Minimum Vital Income (IMV). This decree was published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) last Wednesday, January 29, following an agreement between the Government and Junts.

Congress has scheduled the debate and vote on this decree for February 12. Although its ratification is expected, with the political mud that has been hanging over the Congress of Deputies lately, it is advisable to keep an eye on the movements of the main parliamentary groups in case there is any last-minute change of direction.

Although pensions are traditionally paid on the first working day of the following month (normally Social Security pays pensions), many banks make these payments in advance. For example, Bankinter is the earliest bank, as it usually processes payment from 21 February, while Santander, Unicaja and CaixaBank opt for the 24th and BBVA, Ibercaja, Kutxabank, Cajamar, ING and Banco Sabadell on the 25th. In any case, if in doubt, it is advisable to confirm the exact payment date with the bank.

In principle, the payment of pensions will not be affected either in date or in form in February; in fact, many retirees have already received a personalized letter from the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration notifying them of the increase and with a comparative table between the total amount they received previously and the amount they will receive from now on with this increase.
