This year's Goya Awards, broadcast on La 1 de TVE, left more than just the emotional speeches and expected awards. According to Canarias7, in a discreet but strategic political move, the presence of the mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Marco Aurelio Pérez, and the Minister of Tourism and Employment of the Government of the Canary Islands, Jéssica de León, both from the PP, stood out among the audience. Both attended as guests of the Film Academy with a clear objective: to strengthen Maspalomas' candidacy as the venue for the Goyas in 2027, a key election year.
But the real script was being written behind the scenes. The PP has intensified contacts with the world of cinema, including with actors and filmmakers traditionally close to Sanchismo, in an attempt to seduce them with the idea of a gala in the Canary Islands paradise. Beyond the tourist attraction, the PP sees the arrival of the Goyas in Maspalomas as a double opportunity: tourist promotion and velvet with a film industry that needs financial support to move forward, such as the guarantees of ICO or the AGR.
The images of Pérez and De León at the gala were not coincidental. Their presence was part of a carefully designed strategy: national visibility, dialogue with the industry and a nod to the electorate that links culture with politics. The 2027 awards could be the calling card of a PP that wants to show its strength in the cultural sector without losing the favor of the most conservative voters.
The question is whether the Film Academy, whose ecosystem has traditionally been critical of the right, will give in to the courtship. For the moment, the PP has managed to place Maspalomas in the conversation, and in politics - as in cinema - sometimes the most important thing is to be in the right scene at the right time.
