The new formation of the mayors of Gran Canaria who have left Nueva Canarias will open themselves to alliances with PSOE and PP in the Canary Islands "when appropriate," a source from the new party that is being formed in accordance with the Ministry of the Interior's regulations told Maspalomas24H. On the other hand, the party that the mayor of Mogán, Onalia Bueno, Juntos por Canarias, is already registered by an organization in Tenerife. The new party will invite Marco Aurelio Pérez's Residents' Group to join when its agreements with the PP expire. "Since the PSOE has thrown us out of our mayoralties, there are no longer any romantic arguments," said the same source.
"ICAN made a pact with the PP at the time, in fact Óscar Hernández, mayor of Agüimes was a Sports Councillor with the PP and the veteran assemblyman Carmelo Ramírez was vice-president with the PP," said sources from the new movement that defines itself as progressive, adding that Nueva Canarias gave its vote to an investiture of Mariano Rajoy. The Canarian PP in Las Palmas has as its leader Poli Suárez, Education Councillor of the Canary Islands Government. The same sources pointed out that "the absence of grassroots Christians in the new organisation was until now a burden to be able to open the party due to the sectarian nature of Ramírez himself, who has been an electoral meat mincer and does not want to admit it to the point that he has preferred to destroy the project rather than step aside."
In Gran Canaria, local politics has taken a turn with the formation of a new coalition headed by Teodoro Sosa, mayor of Gáldar. Sosa, who recently split from Nueva Canarias (NC), has decided to create a new political platform together with other mayors and local leaders of the island. This decision comes after months of internal tensions within NC, where a group of mayors and local leaders requested a renewal in the party leadership, without success.
The new coalition, which is still in the process of defining its name and statutes, seeks to maintain a nationalist, progressive and municipalist ideology. Among the leaders who support this initiative are Óscar Hernández (Agüimes), Francisco Atta (Valsequillo), Pedro Rodríguez (Guía) and Raúl García Brink (Las Palmas). Sosa has stated that this new political formation will not cause instability in the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, where he is currently vice president.
The aim of this new coalition is to consolidate itself in Gran Canaria and expand its influence in the political landscape of the archipelago. Sosa has stressed that they will continue to be "municipalists, nationalists and progressives", and that they will collaborate with other formations and people critical of the NC leadership. The creation of this new political platform represents a turning point in Canarian politics, highlighting the internal divisions in NC and the growing demand for renewal by critical sectors.
