Urban Planning creates an Inspection Unit to reinforce the regularization of terraces in Maspalomas

Alejandro Marichal: “It is necessary to restore order to create a competitive environment that benefits both the local economy and the quality of life of residents and visitors”

Davinia Ramírez: “The objective is to regularize the existing facilities, and enhance the image and functionality of the shopping areas and centers”

The Department of Urban Planning of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana Town Council has launched a new Inspection and Control Unit, focused on the regularisation of terraces located in shopping areas and centres. With this measure, the administration's commitment to restore order in public spaces and improve the image of Maspalomas Costa Canaria is reinforced.

For this reason, the First Deputy Mayor, Alejandro Marichal, and the Councillor for Urban Planning, Davinia Ramírez, together with the head of the Inspection and Control Unit, have begun a round of visits to the areas and shopping centres to have a first contact with the owners, explain to them the implementation of this service and remind them of their duty to comply with the Ordinance Regulating Public Use Spaces for the Installation of Terraces in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana.

The creation of the Inspection and Control Unit is aimed at ensuring compliance with the regulations, payment of the corresponding fees and the correct integration of the terraces into the urban fabric. In this regard, Davinia Ramírez has emphasized that "the objective of the Department of Urban Planning with the creation of this unit is not only to regularize the existing facilities, but also to enhance their positive impact on the image and functionality of the commercial areas, thus contributing to a more harmonious and attractive urban environment."

For his part, the first deputy mayor, Alejandro Marichal, has highlighted the importance of this project within the framework of the tourist and urban development of the municipality. Marichal stresses that, recently, the Department of Urban Planning signed an agreement with the Government of the Canary Islands to draft the Modernisation and Improvement Plan for Maspalomas Costa Canaria and that, “this Modernisation Plan will aim to provide urban incentives for the accommodation plant and, especially, for the shopping centres; however, it is also necessary to restore order in our tourist destination and, for that reason, we have created an inspection and control unit for our terraces”.

This PMM, Marichal continues, “seeks, in addition to promoting urban incentives, to generate an orderly and competitive environment that favors both the local economy and the quality of life of residents and visitors.”

Background of terrace regulations

It is worth remembering that, in 2019, during his time in the municipal government and as Councillor for Urban Planning, Alejandro Marichal promoted the approval of the Ordinance Regulating Public Use Spaces for the Installation of Terraces. This regulation sought to put an end to the "legal limbo" that affected the hospitality sector, offering legal certainty to entrepreneurs and promoting the aesthetic improvement of terraces, which, in turn, would boost local economic activity. Currently, Marichal, together with the Urban Planning area, is taking up the need for effective regulation that balances economic development and respect for public space.
