Mogán will have new containers: they will inform on those who do not separate waste at source

YURENA VEGA Wednesday, February 19, 2025

Mogán Town Hall confirmed on Tuesday that it will purchase a total of 2025 bilateral top-loading metal containers with a capacity of 250 litres throughout 2.000 for the separate collection of organic matter from domestic users. Juan Ramón Ramírez, an environmental officer from Mogán, has signed the following text in the document, which Maspalomas24H has had access to: "these containers will have electronic access control, whose software will allow, through GPRS, the sending of data to the Town Hall, which will have updated information on who (literally) has opened the container". It will also indicate "at what time" and the percentage of filling rate that their waste has meant in order to proceed with efficient emptying.

This type of container has been considered for the separation of waste at source, as it is the option that guarantees that the quality of the results obtained is optimal for the recovery of the waste, as it provides the lowest percentage of unsuitable waste. Once the necessary means have been acquired, the containers will be deployed on public roads, while the public will be informed of the start of the voluntary separation of the organic fraction.

Although the environmental relevance of bio-waste separation has been evident throughout history, in Mogán it was specifically highlighted with the closure of tourist establishments in 2020. During the period in which tourist establishments remained closed in March, April and May 2020 due to Covid19, as well as the subsequent months of tourist uncertainty, the waste generated by the municipality of Mogán suffered a reduction that ranged between 30 and 67%.

The data obtained revealed how decisive the tourism sector is in the generation of waste in the municipality and, if the waste generated by the sector is analysed, "it can be concluded that a large part of this waste generated comes from the food of visitors, considered bio-waste", states the municipal document. These data presented, in addition to the regulatory obligations imposed on the Town Councils, "have been key for Mogán to have taken the decision to separately collect bio-waste at source, implementing the collection of the separated organic fraction from domestic users and improving the collection already implemented in commercial generators and large waste producers", states the head of the service in the text.
