The village of San Nicolás woke up today in shock after learning of the death of an 87-year-old resident in her home in the El Cruce neighborhood.
The woman, mother-in-law of the mayor of the municipality, Pedro Suárez Moreno (Nueva Canarias - Frente Amplio Canarista), was found dead this morning with signs of knife violence.
The security forces received notice of the incident and, after going to the scene, confirmed the death. The victim had a cut on the neck. Given this situation, the Territorial Team of the Judicial Police of the main post of Santa María de Guía and the Organic Unit of the Judicial Police of the Command of Las Palmas were activated to begin the investigation.
The main hypothesis points to a 54-year-old resident of La Aldea, who was arrested at 10:00 a.m. after his home was searched and entered, authorised by the judicial authority. According to sources close to the case, the man is a drug addict.
The Government delegate in the Canary Islands, Anselmo Pestana, confirmed the arrest of the suspect and stressed the importance of strengthening social care measures for people with addictions, pointing out that drugs represent "a serious problem that affects security" due to associated crimes, such as robberies and episodes of violence.
The investigation continues under secrecy decreed by the judicial authority of the district of Santa María de Guía. In the framework of the investigation, agents of the Civil Guard have collected evidence at the victim's home and taken statements from several people to clarify the facts.
