Ruyman Cardoso: "39 operations have been carried out, with a total of 234 transfers from Paseo Costa Canaria to the shores of Playa del Inglés."
Alejandro Marichal: "This work is of utmost importance for the regeneration of the dune ecosystem and the protection of the sanitation network."
Since March 22, 2024, the Department of Beach Cleaning of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council has been carrying out intensive work to remove and relocate the accumulated sand on the Paseo Costa Canaria, transporting it to the shore of Playa del Inglés. This initiative, carried out following authorization granted by the Gran Canaria Island Council, explains Councilor Ruyman Cardos, "has allowed a total of 3.379.200 kilograms of sand to be mobilized, favoring the recovery of the dune ecosystem and ensuring the protection of adjacent urban infrastructure."
For his part, the First Deputy Mayor, Alejandro Marichal, highlighted the importance of this work in preserving the natural environment, given that "this action not only keeps the Paseo Costa Canaria in optimal condition, but also contributes to the regeneration of the dune field. The sand that is carried to the beach is naturally reincorporated into the dune system thanks to the action of the wind, thus ensuring its long-term conservation."
Over the past 12 months, the work has been carried out according to a strict protocol that ensures compliance with environmental regulations. The work followed an action plan that allowed the sand to be removed in five-meter strips from the promenade wall toward the Maspalomas Dunes Special Nature Reserve, while respecting the protection of the existing sewage system.
Cardoso also emphasized the City Council's commitment to the proper management of natural spaces: "From the very beginning, we have worked in coordination with the Gran Canaria Island Council and the technical teams responsible for the MasDunas project. This joint effort has allowed us to transport sand with minimal impact on the ecosystem and ensuring the effectiveness of the project."
The City Council has stated its intention to continue these maintenance tasks periodically until a definitive solution is implemented to relocate the sewage system outside the protected area. This relocation, according to the Nature Reserve Management Plan, is key to preventing future sand accumulation on the Paseo Costa Canaria and minimizing disruption to the dune ecosystem.
Finally, Ruyman Cardoso called on the public to contribute to the maintenance of the environment: “It is essential that we all collaborate in the preservation of this unique space. These actions not only seek to improve the image of Playa del Inglés, but also to protect an ecosystem of great value to the municipality and the entire island.”
