Four years to install solar panels on the San Fernando pools in Maspalomas

The Maspalomas Tourism Rehabilitation Consortium confirmed last weekend that the Canary Islands' economic capital is "moving forward" with initiatives such as the incorporation of renewable energy in the Ernesto Hernández Swimming Pool, inclusive access to beaches, and new recreational areas, such as the viewing platform project. "Innovation at the service of all," the organization stated.

But the fine print of all this is different. The tender for the project was put out in 2021 on August 30 of that year, with a base budget estimated at €595.227,40. The city council, then in the hands of the PSOE and NC, stated that it was part of the Strategic Plan being developed in Maspalomas, financed by the Gran Canaria Island Council for a total amount of approximately €XNUMX million.

The pool renovation involved renovating the domestic hot water systems: water distribution networks, backup systems, and protection against overheating and/or freezing. Furthermore, the pools have been fitted with solar covers to prevent heat loss to outdoor pools during off-peak hours. An existing heat collection subsystem will be utilized and other subsystems will be incorporated, both for heat exchange and for air-source heat pump and conventional emergency heating systems, marking a leap in quality and the development of energy innovation.

Already in 2021, it was announced that the necessary infrastructure for charging electric vehicles would be created in the existing parking lot at the sports facility itself, as well as the installation of a 100 kW photovoltaic field of solar energy collectors on the roof of the sports complex itself, making the entire facility an example of energy sustainability. San Bartolomé de Tirajana's Sports Councilor, Samuel Henríquez, emphasized that these works would begin "before the end of the year." March 2025 is already in sight for the "diversification of Maspalomas' offering as a leading sports, health, and physical activity destination."
