The incident occurred at 15:45 p.m. on Maspalomas beach in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, when the Canary Islands Government's Emergency and Safety Coordination Center (CECOES) 1-1-2 received a call alerting them that a man had been rescued from the sea with obvious signs of drowning. 1-1-2 immediately activated the appropriate emergency resources, including a medical ambulance from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), the Red Cross Beach Rescue Service, the Local Police, and the National Police.

Red Cross personnel on the scene began basic CPR on the victim on the shore. Upon the arrival of the SUC team, advanced CPR was continued, but without success, and the man's death was confirmed at the scene.
