Ramírez threatens to expel all dissidents from southern Gran Canaria from NC

The leader of Nueva Canarias, Carmelo Ramírez, has warned Nueva Canarias leaders in southern Gran Canaria, such as local leader Samuel Henríquez, that their days as senior elected officials in the party are numbered. Local NC sources told Maspalomas24H that "Ramírez can sing mass" but that "in 2023 there was a CN and Frente Amplio coalition, and in Tirajana we are all in Frente Amplio." Nueva Canarias (NC-FAC) obtained 5 councilors, with 3.390 votes, representing 16,7% of the total, and received the support of business leaders from southern Gran Canaria who did not pretend to support the organization, believing it to be more solid.

Political tensions in southern Gran Canaria have reached a critical point, with accusations of a "Stalinist purge" led by Carmelo Ramírez of Nueva Canarias (NC). This situation is triggered by the growing defection of NC members to the new party of Teodoro Sosa, a former comrade and now political rival, along with the mayor of Agüimes, Óscar Hernández.

Ramírez's critics denounce pressure, exclusion, and marginalization against those who support Sosa, creating a climate of fear and mistrust. NC flatly denies the accusations, but tension persists. The division of the nationalist vote could alter the balance of power in the upcoming elections, reshaping the local political landscape. The leaders' ability to engage in dialogue and maintain unity within their parties will be key to the region's political future. The polarization between Ramírez and Sosa supporters predicts a tense and contested 2027 election campaign. The resolution of this conflict will depend on the leaders' ability to engage in dialogue and find a path toward reconciliation.
