The mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Marco Aurelio Pérez, expressed his confidence that the Moroccan community in southern Gran Canaria understands that they live in the economic capital of the Canary Islands. Pérez attended a Ramadan meeting with one of the organizations that operates as a friendship association between the Canary Islands and Morocco. The event aimed to strengthen social ties and highlight the role of Moroccan women abroad.
This meeting is not listed in Pérez's official agenda. It was through the Moroccan press that we learned of it. The association's president, Hoda Sharadi, confirmed to Rue20 that "this event reflects the great interest Moroccan women arouse both at home and abroad" and that the event "reflects their distinguished status in Islamic society and faith."
The Moroccan population in southern Gran Canaria is part of a larger community in the Canary Islands. According to recent data, there are approximately 18.345 Moroccan residents in the archipelago. Most of them are concentrated in the province of Las Palmas, with 14.054 registered residents, while in the western provinces of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, there is a smaller presence, with 4.291 residents.
