Gran Canaria accelerates its promotion in Germany before the donkey belly hits Las Palmas.

Gran Canaria has once again emerged as an attractive destination, winning the admiration of a group of travel agents from the German hybrid tour operator Vtours. Between March 10 and 14, 2025, the island hosted a famtrip designed to showcase the diversity and value of its tourism offering, with the aim of consolidating its position in the competitive German market. This is a very useful period for promotion before the appearance of the phenomenon known as "donkey belly," a meteorological circumstance characteristic of the Canary Islands' political capital, Las Palmas, and other northern areas. It refers to the accumulation of low clouds that act as a kind of natural sunscreen, helping to maintain moderate temperatures even in the hottest summer months.

This phenomenon is caused by the combination of trade winds, the Azores high pressure, and the islands' mountainous terrain. Clouds accumulate on the northern slopes, creating a gray sky. This fact unnerves hoteliers and restaurant staff, desperate for sales, given that the domestic market is dominated by civil servants and retirees. And they have bank loans to escape.

During their visit to Gran Canaria, the travel agents stayed at hotels such as Cordial Mogán Playa and Lopesan Costa Meloneras Resort. In collaboration with Gran Canaria Tourism and the local operator MTS (MTS Globe Group), a day trip was organized that allowed participants to immerse themselves in the island's interior landscapes and connect with the essence of its culture from the south of Gran Canaria.

The initiative aimed to broaden the perception of Gran Canaria as a sun-and-beach destination, also highlighting its natural, cultural, and culinary riches. Participant feedback was overwhelmingly positive. On Vtours' Instagram account (@vtours_expilounge), travel agents shared their enthusiasm with messages such as: "One of the best trips so far," "Great group experience in Gran Canaria," and "It was a truly exciting experience." These reactions reflect the positive impact of the promotional campaign.

The success of this famtrip underscores Gran Canaria Tourism's commitment to building stronger ties with key players in the tourism sector and promoting the island as a destination offering authentic and memorable experiences. The collaboration with Vtours and MTS has been instrumental in achieving this goal, and similar initiatives are expected to further strengthen Gran Canaria's position in the international market.
