The metropolitan union CC.OO has attacked Lopesan for the labor crisis it was unable to resolve during the period of uncertainty surrounding the hotel project in the south of Gran Canaria in the Spanish capital. "After acquiring the company last November, they are trying to get rid of 100 workers in a highly opaque manner," the union claims, which has called a general strike in the Canary Islands tourism sector for Easter. The union alleges that they lack "the professionals who have worked at this iconic hotel their entire lives."

The hotel has been closed since the pandemic, embarking on a renovation process that has suffered constant delays. During this period, the CCOO (Working Council of Workers' Compensation) negotiated the various procedures, understanding that the reason for the temporary suspension of employment contracts was genuine, as the hotel remained closed for renovations. Once the staff exhausted their unemployment benefits, they negotiated a severance payment tied to the minimum wage, which partially alleviated the dire situation.

Following the acquisition and transfer of the hotel's workforce to the Lopesan group, "we finally understood that the hotel's opening was closer, given the track record of this company, which boasts in the media about its experience in the hotel sector, its ample liquidity, and solvency." However, the company's proposals during the new consultation period "have sought to divide the RPT and the workforce, offering bonuses to people who were working for other companies and forgetting about all those who cannot count on employment or benefits."

"Lopesan has had no intention of negotiating at any point, but rather of disguising its intentions. We have currently requested immediate information about the status of the workforce when the current process ends, and have received no response. There is nothing behind closed doors, only bad faith," concludes CC.OO.
