The automotive market in southern Gran Canaria registered a notable increase during the month of March, driven largely by the car rental sector in tourist areas. In the region, the total number of registrations reached significant figures, reflecting the positive impact of tourism on vehicle demand in these areas. Growth in registrations has been uneven across the islands. Gran Canaria leads the increase with 44% more registrations, reaching 2.066 units, representing more than half of all registrations in the Canary Islands.
According to Manuel Sánchez, president of Aconauto Canarias, the market recovery is extending to all sales channels, with the growth in the purchase of electric vehicles particularly notable. By sales channel, the private channel continues to be the main one with 1.917 registrations, followed by Rent-a-Car with 1.270 units and the B2B channel with 920 units, all with positive growth. Particularly noteworthy is the growth of the business channel, which increased by 59% compared to March 2024 and registered 197 more units than in February of this year," notes Sánchez.
However, he noted that the full implementation of incentives such as the MOVES III Plan could have allowed for more ambitious goals to be achieved. Despite these encouraging results, he warned of potential challenges stemming from international trade policies and tariffs in key markets that could impact the sector in the short term.
In the breakdown of registrations by channel, rent-a-car has shown significant growth in the south of Gran Canaria, demonstrating its importance in the local market structure. This channel is positioned as one of the main vehicle distribution channels, reinforcing the connection between the tourism boom and the dynamism of the automotive market in the region. This sustained growth reflects the recovery and momentum of the sector in this key area of the archipelago.
