The hospitality sector's unions in the Canary Islands, including the UGT (Union of Workers' Union), the Workers' Union (USO), the Intersindical (Intersindical), and the Canarian Trade Union Federation-Base Trade Unionists (SB), announce their support for the strike notice for Holy Thursday and Good Friday, initially promoted by Base Trade Unionists. This movement seeks to highlight the demands of the tourism sector on the islands.
The decision follows a meeting between unions and employers' associations in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, including Ashotel and AERO, mediated by the Canary Islands Government's Ministry of Employment and Tourism. However, the meeting failed to reach a satisfactory agreement, causing the labor dispute to escalate ahead of Easter.
For its part, the CCOO (Working Workers' Commissions), which does not participate in the hospitality industry committee, welcomes the union of other union organizations in this strike. In its statement, it strongly criticizes the employers' stance, describing it as a lack of social commitment and pointing out that this strike represents the only way to address the needs of workers in the sector.
The unions insist that this call transcends the differences between organizations. The action focuses on advancing labor rights, improving aspects such as healthcare, work-life balance, and salary conditions. The demand, they assert, seeks to positively impact the quality of life of hospitality workers.
The CCOO emphasizes that the success of this strike will depend on the cohesion of all organizations and the resistance to possible offers that do not meet the main demands. They trust that this mobilization will mark a turning point for the hospitality sector in the Canary Islands.
