The City Council awards Velplus Construcciones SL the contract for the renovation of the locker rooms, stands, cafeteria, and exterior enclosure of the football field for €1.142.373,34

The San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council has awarded Velplus Construcciones SL the contract to renovate the locker rooms and stands at the Juan Grande Football Field for €1.142.373,34, resulting in a saving of €11.638 at the close of the tender.

This initiative, led by the Department of Sports, headed by the fourth deputy mayor, Ramón Suárez Ojeda, is funded by a direct grant from the Gran Canaria Island Sports Institute.

The contract for the works was signed by the contractor on March 10, and they will have a six-month deadline for execution, beginning upon the signing of the certificate confirming the layout of the works.

With this project, the Department of Sports aims to give the Juan Grande Football Field a practically comprehensive overhaul. The building, designed by architect Juan Manuel Martín Hernández and constructed 46 years ago for 7,5 million pesetas, has only been subject to occasional minor repairs, but not extensive work to preserve, improve, and modernize it.

In this regard, the work now underway is primarily intended to demolish the current stands and locker rooms to completely renovate the facility; also to provide a complementary bar-café with a terrace area; and to comprehensively improve the entire exterior of the stadium.

Obsolete facilities

The construction of the new locker room will renovate and improve all the severely deteriorated and outdated plumbing, electrical, metal and aluminum carpentry facilities, as well as their furnishings. These works will also provide the football field with four changing rooms for athletes, each measuring approximately 4 m², two more changing rooms for referees; three service restrooms for men, women, and people with reduced mobility; two club offices; a storage room for equipment; and a room for general facilities.

This construction project has been processed fairly expeditiously by the Department of Sports, headed by Ramón Suárez. To finance it, the City Council, led by Mayor Marco Aurelio Pérez Sánchez, obtained from the Insular Sports Institute (Insular Institute of Sports) an increase from the initial €23 subsidy on October 2024, 169.789, to the total amount required for its tender of €1.153.959. The project was approved two months later, on December 18, 2024, and just one week later, on December 26, the contracting file for the works was approved. The expenditure authorization for these works was granted by the Municipal Audit Office on January 14, and after the tender process on the centralized state contracting website, on February 6, the offer from Velplus Construcciones was declared the most advantageous for the City Council.
