The contract, awarded to SANIMOBEL SA for 1,85 million euros, will replace 50% of the blue and yellow containers in the municipalities of Santa Lucía, Agüimes, and Ingenio.

The Southeast Gran Canaria Association presented a new contract to modernize the selective waste collection system. The event was attended by the three mayors who make up the Association: Francisco García, mayor of Santa Lucía de Tirajana and president of the association; Vanesa Martín, mayor of Ingenio; and Óscar Hernández, mayor of Agüimes.

Renewal of 50% of the current fleet

The project includes the supply and installation of 800 new containers for paper and cardboard waste (blue containers) and lightweight packaging (yellow containers). The renovation covers approximately 50% of the current fleet of these types of containers in the three municipalities.

Distribution is being carried out gradually, prioritizing areas where containers are most deteriorated. Santa Lucía de Tirajana will receive 360 units, while Agüimes and Ingenio will receive 220 units each.

More efficient and sustainable containers

The NEO model containers, manufactured by the successful bidder, SANIMOBEL SA, have a capacity of 4,73 m³, up from the current 3 m³. They are made from recycled materials, are 100% recyclable, and comply with current regulations regarding accessibility and waste management.

Their main technical features include structural strength, a fire-resistant system, an anti-tip mechanism, bilateral loading, and a design that reduces acoustic impact. They also feature reflective strips, anti-corrosion paint, a leak-proof seal, and silkscreened lettering.

Response to an obsolete fleet

With this measure, the Commonwealth responds to the progressive deterioration of urban equipment used for selective collection, which in many cases shows signs of rust, breakage, opening problems, or insufficient capacity. These deficiencies had been affecting the quality of service, generating overflows, deposits on public streets, and poor waste separation efficiency.

European funds for local transformation

The contract, for a total amount of €1.851.912 (excluding IGIC), was fully financed with European funds from the Next Generation EU program, as part of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan. The aid was processed through the Ministry of Tourism and Employment of the Canary Islands Government, within the framework of the Tourism Resilience Strategy in the Archipelago.

During his speech, Francisco García emphasized that the acquisition of the new containers "has not entailed any cost for the Commonwealth" and that "the complete replacement is expected to take approximately one month."

García also emphasized that the containers "comply with all European Union waste and accessibility regulations, in addition to offering greater durability, which will contribute to significantly improving selective collection in the three municipalities."

With this project, the Southeast Community of Mancomunidad (Mancomunidad del Sureste) is responding to the progressive deterioration of its urban facilities used for selective waste collection, which were experiencing rust, breakage, opening problems, and insufficient capacity, affecting the efficiency of the service. The renovation aims to optimize waste separation and improve the urban environment in Santa Lucía, Agüimes, and Ingenio.
