The Governing Board of the Maspalomas Gran Canaria Consortium, in coordination with the Gran Canaria Island Council and the San Bartolomé de Tirajana Town Council, has approved a series of new initiatives aimed at transforming the municipality with a sustainable approach. With an investment of over €1,7 million, several projects will be developed to improve residents' quality of life and move toward a more environmentally friendly tourism model. Among the most notable initiatives is the creation of a new bicycle network in the Meloneras area. This initiative will connect existing sections of the city, promoting active mobility and reducing dependence on motorized transport.
Another project involves retrofitting public lighting using LED starlight technology. This system significantly improves energy efficiency and helps reduce light pollution, in line with the principles of protecting the night sky and the natural environment.
Likewise, a pilot project for sustainable urban drainage (SUDS) will be launched in the area surrounding the Maspalomas Pond. This project aims to protect this valuable ecosystem from polluting discharges and improve stormwater management in an environmentally friendly manner. Finally, the restoration of the historic Palm Grove Oasis will be carried out. The actions include cleanup, asphalt removal, the elimination of invasive plant species, and progress on the creation of an open-air interpretation center next to the Pond, which will serve as a space for environmental awareness and a focal point for more conscious tourism.
