Maspalomas is going electric. The quintessential tourist hub of southern Gran Canaria has taken a firm step toward sustainable mobility, incorporating a growing network of electric vehicle charging stations that now totals 16 active stations, many of them installed in the last year. This commitment is part of a quiet but determined strategy to transform its infrastructure and adapt to the demands of a new transportation model. Avis rental cars offer effective solutions for tourists.
In key areas such as Avenida de Gran Canaria, Tour Operador Neckermann, and Holidayworld Maspalomas, you'll find the most recent chargers installed by Unelco Endesa X Way, the company leading the installation of these devices in the municipality. Among them, the station on Avenida Tour Operador Neckermann stands out, the latest addition, which came into operation in mid-December 2024.
The data is clear: 12 of the current 16 chargers have been added in the last six months. This growth confirms the interest of both the public and private sectors in consolidating an electric ecosystem in an area traditionally dominated by rental tourism and private transportation.
Most of these chargers are Type 2, the European standard, compatible with all current electric models. Many of them are available free of charge, although users can check availability and charging conditions in real time through platforms such as Electromaps.
In addition to public roads, electrical infrastructure has also been provided to commercial enclaves such as Holidayworld Maspalomas, one of the main avenues for family leisure in the south, where electric cars can be charged while children enjoy the amusement park or adults relax on the terraces.
This push comes at a time when electric car use, although still a minority on the island, is beginning to move from being a rarity to becoming a real option. Infrastructure is no longer an excuse, at least in this municipality. Wallbox, a leading company in home charging solutions, has also begun to establish a presence in the area, with offerings tailored to both homes and businesses, in line with the growing local demand for alternatives for charging electric cars in private garages or tourist accommodations.
