IKEA launches its first hotel business in Gran Canaria, keeping a low profile and avoiding Scandinavian influences.

The Swedish multinational IKEA is heading into the Canary Islands' summer tourism season with its first hotel venture in Gran Canaria, although it has done so discreetly and without showing visible links to its renowned brand identity. Through Sarton Canarias, its holding company in the archipelago, the company has begun operating a hotel under the brand name Las Dunas de Santa Catalina Boutique House, located at 7 Maestro Valle Street in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Unlike the well-known IKEA hotel in Sweden, this new project does not bear the IKEA name, nor is it decorated with its products, nor does it reflect its Scandinavian design. Nor has it been officially announced who will manage the hotel, and everything indicates that its operation will be delegated to an as yet undisclosed external operator. This is an atypical strategy for a brand that has made functional and accessible design its hallmark.

Sarton Canarias, the Nordic group's head office in the islands, is also planning a second opening: Las Vegas de Ciudad Jardín Suites, which will occupy two adjacent villas (at 15 Brasil Street and 3 Fortuny Street), with a total of 21 rooms. With this boutique accommodation model in residential areas, the firm appears to be exploring a new hotel niche in urban destinations.

This movement contrasts with the hospitality model developed by IKEA in its home country. In Älmhult, Sweden, the world's only IKEA Hotel has been operating for 60 years as a living showcase of Swedish design. Opened in 1964 by Ingvar Kamprad as Motell IKEA, to serve the first customers of his original store, today the hotel has 250 rooms, meeting rooms, a restaurant, a gym, and a sauna. Everything is designed with the motto of "feeling at home" and is filled with products that anyone can find in the IKEA catalog.

While the Swedish IKEA Hotell is a brand extension, the Canary Islands project maintains a low profile, with little connection to the Nordic universe that characterizes the furniture giant. Even so, it represents a significant investment by the company in the Spanish tourism sector, where IKEA already manages assets in destinations such as Palma de Mallorca and the Caribbean, albeit with a notable level of discretion.
