Jet2 strengthens its commitment to Maspalomas: it launches a "hugely expanded" program from Luton for summer 2026.

British airline Jet2 has announced an ambitious flight program from Luton Airport to Gran Canaria, with a direct focus on the Maspalomas holiday segment, for the summer of 2026. The tour operator is thus significantly expanding its presence in the south of the island, with more frequencies, combined packages, and an offering aimed directly at family and sun-and-beach tourism.

According to data from the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC), the British market represented more than 2024% of total tourist arrivals to Gran Canaria in 30, with a particular concentration in the southern municipalities. Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés received more than 1,2 million British tourists that year, a number expected to be surpassed in 2026 if these projections continue.

According to the airline, this is one of its largest summer operations from this London metropolitan area airport. The route reinforcement responds to the high demand observed in recent seasons and to the strategy of diversifying destinations beyond Tenerife and Lanzarote, where Jet2 already has a consolidated presence.

More seats, more frequency, more visibility for Maspalomas

The new plan includes a substantial increase in seats offered to Gran Canaria Airport, with daily flights during the peak summer months. This is complemented by a comprehensive range of tourist packages with stays at Maspalomas hotels and resorts, in collaboration with local operators.

“Demand for Maspalomas has grown consistently, and our customers are increasingly seeking quality experiences in well-connected destinations with guaranteed weather,” said a Jet2 Holidays spokesperson.

An opportunity for the south of the island

The news has been well received by tourism entrepreneurs and local authorities. Maspalomas, which has been positioning itself as a mature but constantly evolving destination, could benefit from a more stable and diversified flow of British tourists. The reinforcement from Luton—an area with significant purchasing power and good internal connectivity with the United Kingdom—aligns with the destination's efforts to continue gaining ground on the European tourism map.

"This not only means more visitors, but also greater competitiveness for our accommodations and an opportunity to generate employment in the south of the island," emphasizes a representative of the hotel sector in San Bartolomé de Tirajana.

Recovery and reorganization context

Jet2's expansion comes at a key moment. After years of post-pandemic recovery, British tourism has returned to record levels in the Canary Islands. However, this growth is occurring amid social tensions over the tourism model, holiday homes, and working conditions in the sector.

The challenge now is to ensure that these types of operations also contribute to the sustainable development of the destination, and not just increase arrival numbers.
