Fires lurking in southern Gran Canaria: dirty reed beds, uncontrolled ravines, and an abandoned palm grove in Fataga

Fire outbreaks are increasing in southern Gran Canaria due to neglect in clearing ravines and forest areas. The lack of security and control exacerbates a worrying situation at the start of May.

The recent lack of clarity regarding the fire declared in the Fataga palm grove This has raised alarm among neighbors. The fire started near the shelter for migrant children, where several people were reported to be smoking under the dry palm trees, showing no concern for the risk. The area, surrounded by abandoned vegetation, is evidence of imminent danger for which no effective preventive measures have been taken.

This is not an isolated case. There have been incidents in San Fernando. repeated urban fires, especially in areas near the Bellavista residential area, where some ravines are filled with debris and weeds. These spaces, illegally occupied by homeless people, have led to worrying outbreaks. Neighborhood complaints warn of the lack of control, lack of cleanliness, and lack of security, exacerbating a situation that could lead to serious consequences if urgent action is not taken.

The latest example occurred on May 1 in the municipality of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, where dry scrubland burned in the Parral Grande areaAlthough it was brought under control in time, this is yet another sign of a summer that could be especially difficult for Gran Canaria. The neglect of the territory, institutional apathy, and a lack of prevention measures are turning the ravines, palm groves, and sugarcane fields into real fuses ready to burn.
