In the heart of Playa del Inglés, the Yumbo shopping center not only pulses to the rhythm of the LGBTQ+ nightlife for Pride 2025, but has also established itself as a true tax haven for personal shopping. In broad daylight, its aisles fill with tourists—mostly European—who find it a unique opportunity to purchase electronics, phones, and clothing at VAT-free prices, given that the Canary Islands tax is just 7%.

This hub of gay tourism in Europe has managed to diversify its offerings. Beyond the bars and drag queens that dominate the nightlife, during the day, Yumbo becomes a modern souk where technology and fashion share a showcase with everyday items and quality souvenirs. Cutting-edge wireless headphones, unlocked cell phones, sports cameras, smartwatches, designer sunglasses, and designer clothing are just a few examples of what can be found in its specialty stores.

The main attraction lies in the Canary Islands' special tax status, which allows businesses to sell products without the Value Added Tax (VAT) that applies to the rest of the European Union. Instead, the IGIC (Canary Islands General Indirect Tax) is applied, at a much lower rate—currently 7%—which translates into direct and significant savings for consumers. Many visitors know this: a getaway to Gran Canaria can also be the perfect excuse to upgrade their cell phone, get some AirPods, or buy exclusive clothing at lower prices than in their home countries.

Yumbo retailers know their clientele well. They understand that gay tourism is demanding, loyal, and has high purchasing power, so they pay attention to detail and ensure a great shopping experience. Most stores are equipped to serve customers in several languages and offer authentic products with a guarantee and return policy, which reinforces the trust of international customers.

This commercial phenomenon isn't new, but it gained even more momentum after the pandemic, when many businesses in southern Gran Canaria decided to focus on high-value products to survive the decline in tourism. Now, with the massive return of visitors, Yumbo has strengthened its position as a premium shopping center, where the party starts with a drink... but it can also start with a credit card in hand.

María, a tourist from Madrid visiting Gran Canaria for the second time this year, comments: "I come mainly for the nightlife options, but what really convinces me to come here is the opportunity to buy tech products at much lower prices than in Spain. This year, I bought some new headphones and a smartwatch that cost 20% more on the mainland. It's a considerable savings."

For his part, Thomas, a German visitor who has been browsing Yumbo stores for years, notes: "This mall has become my favorite place to buy gadgets and technology. Every time I come, I pick up a new phone or some accessories. Plus, the stores have exclusive products that aren't easily found in my country."

According to a recent study by Promotur Turismo de Canarias, LGBTQI+ tourists visiting southern Gran Canaria typically spend an average of €120 per person per day. Of this spending, around 30% is spent on shopping, a significant portion of which is focused on electronics and fashion. This is partly due to the selection of exclusive brands that tourists don't usually find in their home countries.

Given this scenario, it is estimated that spending by LGBTQ+ businesses in southern Gran Canaria could exceed €100 million annually, highlighting the significant economic impact of this market in the area. In addition to regular tourists, the diversification of Yumbo's offerings has also been key to attracting an ever-wider audience. Stores have evolved to offer cutting-edge electronics, designer clothing, exclusive perfumes, and all kinds of items at extremely competitive prices, thanks to the VAT exemption.

The Yumbo shopping center has thus become a true shopping destination for those seeking quality and savings, reinforcing the competitiveness of southern Gran Canaria compared to other tourist areas. Yumbo is not only a benchmark in terms of shopping and entertainment for gay tourism. With the growing interest in low-cost tax destinations, the trend among tourists to purchase electronics, luxury clothing, and personal items at lower prices is only increasing. As the market continues to evolve, the shopping center will continue to be a key pillar for quality tourism in southern Gran Canaria, combining its appeal with the unique experience of enjoying the Canary Islands' tax haven.
