For the tenth consecutive year, local produce and the island's gastronomy are once again the focus of attention at the SPAR Gran Canaria stand for the Gran Canaria Me Gusta Fair, held from May 9th to 11th at the Infecar Fairgrounds. The supermarket chain is once again participating as one of the main sponsors of this 12th edition, demonstrating its commitment to zero-mile products.
SPAR Gran Canaria once again demonstrates its unwavering support for the primary sector with a stand that will showcase the quality of island produce. This commitment is reinforced through the various agreements the supermarket chain maintains with a multitude of local producers and farmers.
Visitors will find a wide selection of fruits and vegetables grown in Gran Canaria, including tomatoes from La Aldea, strawberries from Valsequillo, lettuce from Guía, potatoes from San Mateo, carrots from Mogán, white cabbage from Gáldar, zucchini from Telde, cucumbers from Santa Lucía de Tirajana, and papayas from La Aldea.
After surpassing 5.000 kilos of local produce sold last year, SPAR Gran Canaria expects to surpass this figure with the sale of more than 6.000 kilos of its stand assortment this year, thus promoting the consumption of local fruits and vegetables among the population. All of these locally sourced products, 100% from Gran Canaria, will be on sale at special prices.
The fair once again featured the food truck 'La SPARETA' this year, a new addition to last year's edition. It will offer an extensive menu based on locally sourced ingredients such as tomatoes from La Aldea, lettuce from Guía, onions from Gáldar, and arugula from Telde, among others. It will be located in the Infecar food court.
Tastings, gastronomic exhibitions and children's workshops
SPAR Gran Canaria has also contributed to the fair program this year with two culinary exhibitions led by Canarian chef Lolo Román. The first day will feature the exhibition "Gran Canaria Tastes Like Roots," where watercress, avocado, and cheese will be the star ingredients. In the "Gran Canaria Tastes Like Tradition" exhibition, the chef will prepare an avant-garde menu featuring a first course of wrinkled potatoes with chocolate and avocado sauce, a Canarian seafood ranch, and a dessert made with banana, orange, and gofio.
The chain's stand will also host several tastings of local products. Visitors can try wrinkled potatoes with mojo sauce on Friday; a cheesecake with Indian prickly pear jam on Saturday; and a Firgas watercress salad with La Aldea tomatoes and soft cheese on Sunday.
As a complement, the SPAR Gran Canaria group has also organized the now traditional children's workshops, which each year introduce children to healthy eating based on the consumption of seasonal fruit. These children's fruit art workshops will take place in four sessions during the first day of the fair, at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 16:30 p.m., and 18:00 p.m.
The 16:30 p.m. children's workshop will be held with several families from the Mi Hijo y Yo Association, with which SPAR Gran Canaria has a collaboration agreement to support families with children with Pervasive Developmental Disorders or Autism Spectrum Disorders.
