Survival Manual: How to survive bedbugs and insecurity on your way through Madrid-Barajas Airport on your way to Gran Canaria.

The growing insecurity and unhealthiness of Terminal 4 of Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, marked by a bedbug infestation, could affect flights to Gran Canaria and the island's international connections.

If your travel itinerary to Gran Canaria includes a stopover at Madrid-Barajas Airport, prepare for an experience that, at this point, borders on survival. Terminal 4, the epicenter of international flights and connections to the Canary Islands, is facing a critical situation marked by pest infestation, unsanitary conditions, and a growing sense of insecurity due to the increase in homeless people staying overnight there.

For weeks, workers and unions have reported a bedbug infestation at Terminal 4. The bites are frequent and affect travelers, cleaning staff, counter and boarding area workers, and even flight crews. Although Aena denies a widespread infestation, it acknowledges the presence of insects in specific locations and has carried out spot fumigations.

The situation is worsened by the presence of nearly 500 homeless people spending the night at the airport. Following complaints from some airlines, Aena decided to move them to level -1 of Terminal 4, an area less visible to passengers. However, this measure has led to overcrowding and has not resolved the underlying problems. Passengers, workers, and unions report that the situation has led to conflicts, poor hygiene, and a growing atmosphere of insecurity.

The combination of pests, unsanitary conditions, and the presence of homeless people has created a tense atmosphere at the airport and has already led to a confrontation between Aena and Madrid City Council, with both institutions washing their hands of the issue and evading responsibility for the growing presence of homeless people at the airport.

If your flight to Gran Canaria includes a stopover in Barajas Airport, especially in Terminal 4, it's a good idea to take precautions: avoid sitting in uncrowded areas, keep your belongings secure, and, if possible, limit your waiting time in common areas. Electronic devices, such as tablets, headphones, and laptops, are coveted by thieves, so it's a good idea to minimize their use in the terminal. Padlocks can be a great way to prevent scares, loss, and theft of your luggage.

Given the growing insecurity at Terminal 4, it's a good idea to avoid the terminal's "blind spots." That is, try to wait in busy areas with open shops, good lighting, and, ideally, where an airport security officer is present. However, all of this requires constant vigilance over our belongings.

For long waits at Terminal 4 and given the situation in the terminal, it's a good idea to bring your own travel pillow and some single-use clothing (disposable towels, plastic raincoats, garbage bags, etc.) that can be used as seat covers and disposed of later, especially if you'll be spending hours waiting in common areas.

Avoid placing carry-on luggage or backpacks directly on the floor, and even better if you use hard-sided suitcases, which offer greater protection and make it more difficult for bedbugs to get into your luggage. Wear light-colored clothing—it's easier to spot bedbugs with the naked eye—and if you notice unusual bites, contact the airport medical staff as soon as possible.

Finally, a toiletry bag with disinfectant wipes and some repellent spray can be a great help in surviving the jungle that has become one of the main gateways to the country and, in many cases, a necessary and essential stopover to reach Gran Canaria.
