The Southeast Gran Canaria Association is holding a new edition of the International Seminar on Sustainable Regions, consolidating its commitment to debate and reflection on major environmental challenges. This time, the focus will be on climate change and rising sea levels, an urgent issue that will be analyzed by experts in the field. The event will begin tomorrow, Wednesday, May 14, at 17:30 p.m., at the Víctor Jara Theater in Vecindario. There will also be a second session on Thursday, May 15, at the same time. This will provide a unique opportunity to explore sustainability from a scientific, technical, and social perspective.

The opening ceremony will feature a speech by Francisco García, president of the Commonwealth, accompanied by Vanesa Martín, mayor of Ingenio; Óscar Hernández, mayor of Agüimes; and Antonio Morales, president of the Gran Canaria Island Council.

Climate change and rising sea levels represent a crucial challenge for Gran Canaria, but also an opportunity to move toward a more sustainable and resilient development model. The combination of public policies, technological innovation, and citizen engagement will be crucial to protecting the future of the island and its inhabitants.

Conservation of coastal ecosystems is key

While Gran Canaria is known for its diverse landscape and climate, its island status makes it particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, especially rising sea levels. Coastal ecosystems are affected by this rise and the increase in water temperature, leading to a loss of marine biodiversity, disrupting food chains and affecting activities such as artisanal fishing. All of this will be addressed during these two days, the objectives of which include raising public awareness to promote mitigation and adaptation actions.

The Southeast Gran Canaria Association invites you to participate in this multidisciplinary event. Registration is free and can be completed via the following link: https://seminariocomarcassostenibles.com/inscripcion.
