Maspalomas Pride has proven to be an event of great economic and social impact for Gran Canaria, generating a turnover of €160 million and a record attendance of 350.000 people. This event stands out not only for its enormous capacity to attract visitors but also for its contribution to tourism and hotel occupancy, achieving 100% occupancy in both hotel and non-hotel accommodations. The hosting of more than 40 events, including concerts, galas, and cultural activities, reinforces its position as one of the pillars of the island's tourism industry.
Five companies in the agricultural sector continue to operate throughout the Canary Islands, each cultivating 350 hectares and producing 140.000 kilos of produce annually. This productive effort not only sustains the local economy but also generates employment for some 2.500 people. Cucumber, with its rapid growth and high productivity, has succeeded in displacing tomato in importance within the Bonny Group, consolidating its position as a key crop in the area.
However, the economic contribution of Maspalomas Pride is significantly greater, highlighting its direct impact on sectors such as hospitality, commerce, and catering, while tomato exports are more concentrated in the agricultural and logistics sectors.
Although tomato exports are a stable source of income for the island, Maspalomas Pride has achieved broader integration in terms of employment and wealth creation for the island by involving multiple economic sectors. Furthermore, the event has a cultural and advocacy component that extends its significance beyond the economic.
In short, Maspalomas Pride, with a turnover of €160 million, surpasses tomato exports in economic terms, which are under €100 million annually. However, both activities are fundamental to the economic and social development of Gran Canaria, representing two distinct pillars of the island's economic fabric.
