The defecting councilor of Nueva Canarias, Samuel Henríquez, has reported that the experimental Balinese hammocks purchased by the Maspalomas Gran Canaria Consortium have disappeared. The curious aspect of the complaint by the councilor, who is currently being deregistered, comes at a time when the presidency of the administrative body, jointly owned by the Gran Canaria Island Council and the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, whose goal is to promote the rehabilitation of public spaces and the modernization of tourism in the Maspalomas area, has changed to the mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Marco Aurelio Pérez.
The complaint comes from Councilman Samuel Henríquez, a former spokesperson for Nueva Canarias, although he no longer belongs to the party with which he was elected. Far from clarifying his political future, he remains in a kind of institutional limbo, neither joining the non-affiliated group nor formally resigning his seat. This ambiguity has led some to dub him part of the "zombie municipal group": councilors without a banner, without a structure, but with voice and vote.
In this context, Henríquez flexes his supervisory muscles with a matter as tangible as it is uncomfortable: €2.000 Balinese beds that disappear without inventory, without cameras, and without explanation. The complaint may seem like a gesture of responsibility, but it's also a low blow aimed at those who now manage the municipality he himself led not so long ago. Mysteries aside, the only certainty is that San Bartolomé de Tirajana continues to lose parts, resources, and direction. And it does so while its tourist capital, Maspalomas, tries to compete for international excellence with a beach where luxury beds vanish before they're even opened. San Bartolomé de Tirajana has located the 10 Balinese beds that the defecting councilors claim are missing. They were acquired in 2023 by the Maspalomas Consortium for €2.018 each as part of a pilot project to improve the tourist experience on the beach owned by the Maspalomas Rehabilitation Consortium.
