The Maspalomas National Police Local Station has a new international recruit today. Officer Monique Mörig, a sub-inspector with the police force of the Federal State of Bremen, Germany, has been officially presented as part of the joint deployment between the two police forces within the framework of the "European Police Stations" project. Her arrival strengthens international security cooperation in key tourist destinations such as the south of Gran Canaria.

The welcoming ceremony was presided over by the Chief of Police of the Canary Islands, Jesús María Gómez Martín, and was attended by Chief Superintendent Francisco Javier Berzal Tejero, provincial chief of Las Palmas, and Chief Inspector Pablo Fernández Sala, head of the Maspalomas police station. Officer Mörig will be on duty, patrolling alongside Spanish officers with the aim of improving police care for German citizens and strengthening the international presence in one of the archipelago's most important tourist destinations.

Collaboration between Spain and Germany on tourism security has been strengthened through various bilateral and multilateral initiatives, with the European Police Stations project being particularly noteworthy. Launched in 2008, the European Police Stations project seeks to strengthen security in high-tourism areas through the temporary deployment of police officers from different countries. In the case of Germany, German police officers patrol alongside the Spanish National Police in towns such as Maspalomas, Estepona, and Ronda, offering assistance to tourists in their own language and improving police services in these destinations.

In addition to joint patrols, Spain and Germany have strengthened their security ties in preparation for international events. Both countries, along with Morocco, have formed a trilateral alliance to strengthen cooperation in the fight against terrorism and transnational organized crime, especially ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Gran Canaria will host.
Germany is one of the main sources of tourists to southern Gran Canaria, and security is a key factor in choosing destinations. Initiatives such as joint patrols and security collaboration have been well received by German tourists, who positively value the presence of German agents in Spanish destinations.
