The Canary Islands Government's Directorate General of Energy has submitted for public consultation the "La Punta II" energy storage facility project, promoted by Satocan Conservación y Mantenimiento, SL, in the municipality of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, on the island of Gran Canaria. This initiative represents a new step toward the hybridization of renewable energy installations in the archipelago, with the aim of increasing the stability and efficiency of the island's electricity system.

The energy evacuation system will be integrated through two underground medium-voltage lines (12/20 kV) with a combined length of 226 meters, connecting the skids to the Protection, Measurement, and Control Center, and from there to the Measurement and Control Center of the "La Punta II" wind farm. The accumulated energy will finally be evacuated to the grid through the existing line that connects to the Matorral 20/66 kV Substation. The overall project budget amounts to €1.904.531,74, representing a significant investment in the consolidation of storage technologies in the Canary Islands, key to managing the variability of renewable energy.

The facility, which requires administrative authorization in accordance with Decree 141/2009 on electrical installations in the Canary Islands, is designed as a substantial modification of the La Punta II wind farm (file ER180058), already in operation. Its main innovation is the incorporation of a storage battery system, which will allow part of the energy produced by the wind to be stored for later use. The storage system will have a total power of 3,913 MW and a capacity of 7,827 MWh, distributed across three LFP (lithium iron phosphate) technology battery containers. Each unit will be linked to a prefabricated skid-type power center, equipped with 1.500 kVA transformers and 1,5 MW inverters each, achieving a total inverter power of 4,5 MW AC.
