NC Mogán denies links to Primero Canarias amid internal party crisis

GH Maspalomas24h Thursday, May 22, 2025

The Local Assembly of Nueva Canarias (NC) in the Gran Canarian municipality of Mogán has denied any kind of rapprochement or integration into the new party, Municipalistas Primero Canarias (MPC), led by the mayors of Gáldar and Agüimes, Teodoro Sosa and Óscar Hernández. Although MPC sources claim to have the support of NC members in Mogán, sources close to Juan Manuel Gabella González, president of the local assembly and one of the two councilors the party retains in the Mogán City Council, "strongly" denied any ties to the splinter group this Wednesday. Gabella also plans to call an assembly for next Tuesday to internally clarify the party's official position in the municipality.

These statements come amid a deep internal crisis in Nueva Canarias, following the recent departure of numerous public and organizational officials. More than twenty councilors and several long-standing leaders have disassociated themselves from Román Rodríguez's project to join MPC, a growing party that already includes eight local independent groups and is moving toward establishing new assemblies throughout the Canary Islands, including one in Mogán.

Meanwhile, NC is trying to stem the disbandment and strengthen its local structures. The Mogán group's refusal to align itself with MPC represents, for now, a small respite for the island's leadership, amid growing fragmentation of the center-left nationalist movement in the Canary Islands. Nueva Canarias (NC) is experiencing an internal crisis that threatens the stability and cohesion of the nationalist party. In recent months, several public officials and long-time members have left the party, driven by strategic differences and disagreements with the leadership led by Román Rodríguez. This disbandment has led to the emergence of new political groups, such as Municipalistas Primero Canarias (MPC), which brings together numerous former NC members, especially councilors who have decided to disengage in order to seek a new, localist project closer to the grassroots.

In key municipalities like Mogán, this crisis has resulted in a fragmentation of the nationalist vote and an internal struggle for control of local assemblies. While some groups seek to maintain unity and defend the original NC project, others are committed to renewal and the creation of alternative platforms. The crisis reflects a difficult period for NC, which must urgently rebuild its structure and rethink its political model to avoid losing further support in future elections.
