INFORMATION ON PERFORMANCES AND ARTISTS

Music and humor, rooted in the collective tree of Canarian identity, flourish once again this year with the Canariona Festival, a celebration where tradition and contemporaneity go hand in hand. It will take place on May 29th in the Plaza de Santa Ana, with a varied lineup that blends styles, tastes, and generations, reflecting the island's very essence and giving prominence to Gran Canarian and Canarian talent.

"This event serves to enjoy our traditions and deepen our identity and cohesion as a people," emphasized Antonio Morales, president of the Gran Canaria Island Council, this morning at the press conference launching this event, sponsored by the island's government and organized by Infecar. Canariona has established itself as a highly anticipated event whose chemistry manages to merge ages and trends through the use of music as a social thread on the night before Canary Islands Day.

Morales recalled that this is the fifth edition of Canariona, which revived the spirit of the pre-Canary Islands Day festivals revived by the Island Council in 2017 and transformed in 2020 into 'CanariON,' a virtual event and symbol of resilience, as it was the first of its kind in the archipelago during the pandemic.

Philologist and poet Yeray Rodríguez, one of the participants in the Covid-era edition, emphasized that at Canariona, "the stage and the audience become mirrors of who we are and allow us to see the faces and feel the pulse of the people." He explained this at the presentation of the lineup held in the Patio del Cabildo, an event also attended by performer Thania Gil; the director of the Gran Canaria Big Band, Chano Gil; and Juan Peña, a member of the Parranda de Teror.

Rodríguez expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to bring the oral tradition he imbibed at the bottom of the ravines "to the heart of the city." Poetically, Canariona will once again burst forth like the murmur of running water. The celebration will begin, for the second consecutive year, with a festive parade featuring the Agaete Band and the unique Papahuevos (Papahuevos) starting at 18:30 p.m. along Triana Street (at the corner of Guirlache), inviting everyone to join in the festivities, which will continue in Plaza de Santa Ana.

Once at the epicenter of Canariona, the performances planned for this new edition will unfold. First up will be the Parranda de Teror with special guest appearances by Thania Gil and Julia Rodríguez. Tenerife comedian Darío López and the aforementioned Yeray Rodríguez will take the stage to deliver another impressive performance of their concept, "P'alante y punto."

Next, the Gran Canaria Big Band will deploy more than twenty performers of different instruments and offer a musical journey accompanied by the island's singers Cristina Ramos, Chago Melián, Iván Quintana, Besay Pérez, Pedro Manuel Afonso, Manuel Estupiñán, and Patricia Muñoz.

Like a leap through time without leaving the centuries-old Plaza de Santa Ana, the night will evolve in musical styles. The first milestone of the artistic metamorphosis will be marked by a performance by NIA, followed by performances by Juseph and DJ Baked Belda, closing out the night dancing under the same sky and in front of that mirror of people in motion, a multifaceted crystal illuminated by the moon, which will reflect the image of a more modern and self-aware Gran Canaria.
