No-Go Zones for Tourism in Gran Canaria: Another Attack on a Tourist in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

A new robbery attack on a tourist has once again put the spotlight on the insecurity in the capital of Gran Canaria.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is once again making headlines for a reason no tourist destination wants to be: insecurity. A new episode of violence has shaken the image of the capital after a tourist was beaten, strangled, and assaulted by two individuals in the heart of the city, specifically on Eduardo Benot Street, just a few meters from Santa Catalina Park and surrounded by tourist accommodations.

This fact adds to a worrying chain of attacks on visitors This has begun to impose a "No Go" zone on the heart of Gran Canaria's capital, setting off alarm bells in the island's tourism sector. For weeks, professional groups, residents, and specialized media have warned of the deteriorating security situation in Gran Canaria's capital.

The situation contrasts with the sustained efforts being made in southern Gran Canaria to maintain the destination's reputation as a European benchmark for sun and sand. While San Bartolomé de Tirajana focuses its efforts on optimizing services and promoting the destination for the summer, the capital seems to be heading in the opposite direction, accumulating incidents that damage the general perception of the archipelago as a safe destination.

The reputational impact is no small feat. Travel forums, reviews, and social media are already reporting on tourists' bad experiences in the capital, which is ultimately affecting the island's entire image as a tourist destination. The island's external image is beginning to suffer, and those who make their living in tourism are observing with growing concern how these episodes and the growing sense of insecurity may end up affecting global demand.
